“Why Did We Wait So Long?” What Downsizers Say After the Move

What Changes After the Move

For many people, life becomes simpler once they move into a home that fits this stage. There is less space to heat and clean, fewer belongings to manage, and less upkeep taking over the weekend. That time and energy often goes toward travel, family, and the things they had been putting off.

The Worry That Holds People Back

Before the move, a common worry is that downsizing means giving up comfort or quality of life. In my experience, the opposite is usually true. Downsizing is about refining your space so it supports the way you live now. The right home can be smaller and still feel comfortable, well designed, and fully yours.

Why So Many Wish They Had Started Sooner

The second comment I often hear is, “Why did we wait this long?” What holds most people back is the transition: sorting belongings, making decisions, and managing the emotions that come with leaving a longtime home. When that part has a plan, the move becomes far more manageable.

If you are wondering what life could look like in a home that fits you better, I'd be glad to talk it through. My Transition with Care guide lays out the process step by step. You can learn more on the Downsizing in Waterloo Region page, or reach out to request a copy.

Nicole Schell, Broker and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) with the Schell Real Estate Team at Peak Realty Ltd. in Waterloo Region, hears this question in almost every first meeting with a downsizer: “Do we need to redo the kitchen before we sell?” In most cases the answer is no, and the plan that works is much smaller than people expect.Adapted from social posts Nicole shared between 2025 and 2026.
